What is iGEM
International genetically engineered machine competition (iGEM), a top international academic competition in the field of synthetic biology, was initiated by MIT in 2003 and developed into an international academic competition in 2005. With synthetic biology as the core, it is an interdisciplinary international science and technology competition involving biology, computer science Mathematics, art design, social activities and other disciplines have attracted extensive attention from academia and industry. The relevant research results of iGEM team are published in nature, science, Scientific American, economists and other top academic journals all year round.

What is synthetic biology
Synthetic biology is a new research field in recent years. It attempts to redesign the existing natural biological systems, or design and construct artificial biological components and systems. Its purpose is to create a new biological system by understanding the operation mechanism of natural biological system. In short, synthetic biology requires us to design biological systems and make them work the way we designed them.

Our record
Nefu_china has participated in this competition since 2014, competing with nearly 400 teams from world-famous universities such as Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of technology, Oxford University, Peking University and Tsinghua University. In this competition, nefu_china has won the three silver medals of hardware and the single award of "best medical diagnosis project" In addition to the "best wiki production" single award and the "best information processing single award", it has also been nominated for the single awards of "best display", "best basic component" and "best component set". I don't know much about synthetic biology. What should I do?

Participating in iGEM is a process of growth and learning for each member. As long as they are interested in synthetic biology and related interdisciplinary fields, in January and February of each year, the team members will conduct case study and literature research in groups in previous years, and organize reports at a fixed time every week. After winter vacation and returning to school to enter the laboratory, the seniors and sisters will teach you to master various basic knowledge and experimental skills. There is no need to worry. It has become the tradition of NEFU igemer for old players to pass, help and lead new players.

I am a non biological student. Can I join iGEM?

Yes, students from different majors and grades are welcome to join. Every year iGEM will attract students of various majors to join. As long as you have ideas and are interested, you can participate. Synthetic biology is a new interdisciplinary subject involving biology, chemistry, computer, engineering, medicine and other fields. IGEM not only needs to complete biological experiments, but also an excellent and rich project, which often involves mathematical modeling, software programming, graphic design and even hardware production. We welcome members with professional skills to join us.

What is the schedule from recruitment to competition?
A
You can refer to the schedule of 2021. In the winter vacation after the recruitment, senior students and sisters will explain the basic knowledge of molecular biology, take you to understand the iGEM competition and learn the theoretical basis of some experiments. During the winter vacation, we will also ask you to learn some cases of previous years in groups and organize online brainstorming to discuss them. The training and assessment of experimental skills will be arranged after the beginning of school, and the final 2022 team members are expected to be selected in April. The concept of case runs from winter vacation to may, and participates in the group meeting every week to report the progress. In late May, the project review will be organized to select the final entries. The following June, the whole summer vacation and even November will be the tense preparatory links.
